Manda and the Marbles
Angels with Dirty Faces
Sick
House Records / 2004
We all miss
the Go-Gos. And if “Walk Like an Egyptian” comes on the radio, most
people would not dis the Bangles and turn it off. But sometimes, I wish
there was a little more…oomph to their music. It’s excellent pop,
to be sure, but it just needs more weight.
Enter Manda
and the Marbles, whose Go-Gos-meets-The Runaways sound fills that need
nicely. Their forthcoming disc, “Angles With Dirty Faces,” is a seamless
combination of good-girl pop and bad-girl rock. Manda’s voice exhibits
the same contradictions, at once a valley-girl drawl and a sex-kitten
purr, tumbling through songs about boys, dancing and – no lie – lipstick
(the undeniably toe-tapping, head-bobbing “Lipstick) with one mission in
mind. As the kickoff track says, these “Kids Just Wanna Dance.”
